Activities in and around the province of Alicante Cheap car hire from Alicante airport with Argus Car Hire is the perfect way to explore Alicante and the surrounding regions. The city of Alicante itself is pleasant and has some interesting sites and points of attraction, but with the freedom afforded by low cost car rental with Argus Car Hire. Why not venture further afield and discover some of the real gems that can be found throughout the Alicante province? Or perhaps you're staying in one of Alicante's famous beach resorts and want to take a break from the sun, sea and sand for an afternoon. With plenty of sights, activities and attractions that will suit most budgets, Alicante province is just waiting to be explored from the comfort and style of your rental car. The following are just four of the many possible excursions you can make in beautiful Alicante. 1. Guadalest Guadalest is a remarkably picturesque and peaceful Spanish village situated on a precarious mountain ridge in a luscious green valley at the foothills of the Sierra de Aitana Mountains. Lying just 25km inland from Benidorm and roughly a two hour leisurely drive from Alicante, the village is a major tourist attraction due not only to its attractiveness and the inspirational views it offers, but due to the fascinating remnants of the village's infamously inaccessible castle. An afternoon just ambling around the village is a rare joy - even the little caves that can be found as you make your way to the top of Guadalest have been turned into little museums and shops selling home made gifts, crafts and local produce. The excursion is particularly suitable for budget travelers, as there is spending necessary to reap the rewards from a visit to Guadalest. Even the best way to eat in the village is cheap - picnicking is the finest way to dine in Guadalest. The spectacular natural surroundings and impelling views turn a low cost picnic into a memorable feast. 2. The Fuentes del Algar Near to Guadalest you will find the stunning Fuentes del Algar (Algar Waterfalls), which are situated in an idyllic and lush national park. Take the road to Callosa d'en Sarriá and from there the falls will be signposted. The walk up to the falls is full of interesting diversions and sights, including swimming pools, a train museum, and outlets selling the local nisperos. The sound of the cascading waters will reach you before the falls come into view, but when they do they are a wonderful sight to behold. Swimming in the clear (and quite cold!) waters at the base of the falls is a refreshing (and also quite cold!) experience. There is a car park fee when you enter the park - but it is quite cheap, at just a few Euros. Even better for people working with a budget, the ticket (which is cheap enough in the first place!) is then redeemable when purchasing drinks or food in the adjacent bar/restaurant. Can't ask for a better deal than that! 3. The Cuevas del Canelobre A short drive from Alicante in your hire car (just 24km northeast) will bring you to the Cuevas del Canelobre - a massive chamber of rock measuring some 150 meters in length and containing some truly impressive stalagmites and stalactites in various fascinating and amusing shapes. The acoustic quality inside the huge cave is such that it is often used as a venue for concerts and folk festivals - with some planning and a bit of luck you might get to experience one of these. If this isn't possible for your excursion, don't worry - the cave is still more than worth visiting. Guided tours are cheap at around €5, and you are guaranteed a visually remarkable experience set to a beautiful soundtrack - there is ambient music pumped into the cave to accompany the tour and enhance the experience. The entrance to the cave can be found high on the Cabezón de Oro, meaning that before you even begin to descend into the stunning natural auditorium you are treated to some wonderful views of the Alicante landscape. 4. Costa Blanca Golf The Costa Blanca is widely known for it's superb range of world-class golf courses, and is widely considered to be a player's paradise. With car hire from Alicante Airport, over 15 golf courses are accessible within a two-hour drive - golfers will be spoiled for choice. A variety of terrains and levels of difficulty ensures that even the finest golfer will be challenged when playing in Alicante. Likewise, novice golfers can find some less taxing courses more suitable to their needs. Greens fees vary from course to course, some being a lot cheaper than others. It should be noted that you will probably pay less for a round in the off-peak season, as demand is so much greater in high season. Not only that, but it is wise to book in advance, particularly on some of the more desirable courses. Oh - and make sure you have room in the boot of your hire car for the golf clubs!
